Where this PhD can lead
Future Oktifani: Lecturer in Media & Communications
Academia, governance and industry in four places: the UK, Indonesia, Europe and the US. Each role has a likelihood score, a difficulty level and links to openings.
Where the odds are best
Bars show the range of likelihood across roles in each place. The dot marks the average.
How to read the scores
Likelihood is a rough planning estimate of the chance of landing one role of that type within about two years of applying seriously. It assumes the PhD is finished with 2–3 publications and combines fit with the research, size of the applicant pool, language and the right to work. Difficulty (1–4) is how much effort and preparation a strong application needs. These are judgement calls, not statistics. Revise them as the profile grows.

Skills from this PhD, mapped to each track
Describe these on CVs in the employer’s language: “discourse analysis” becomes “analysing how organisations and media frame risk and responsibility”.
A year-by-year plan that keeps every door open
Now → Sep 2027
Year 3
- Pass the upgrade and get ethics approval (see readiness).
- Draft Paper 1 (theory, from Ch3) and submit by mid-2027.
- Present a poster at MeCCSA or a Goldsmiths event; submit an abstract to ICA or IAMCR, which recruiters from all four regions attend.
- Start the Advance HE Associate Fellowship (AFHEA) through Goldsmiths teaching or GTA work.
- Set up job alerts now (the links in each role card) to learn the language of the postings.
Oct 2027 → Sep 2028
Year 4
- Submit Papers 2 & 3 (Guardian, Family & Tech) as the chapters are drafted.
- Do one non-academic piece: a policy briefing, a response to a regulator consultation (Ofcom, Komdigi, EU AI Office), or a short consultancy.
- Build relationships with 2–3 research centres in your top two countries; ask about postdoc projects being planned.
- Write a Bahasa Indonesia policy brief for HIMPSI and platforms.
Oct 2028 → viva
Writing-up year
- Submit Paper 4 (Indonesia). Prepare a book proposal if the supervisors agree.
- Apply in waves: postdocs and fellowships 9–12 months ahead; industry and policy roles 2–3 months ahead.
- Prepare three CV versions: academic (publications first), policy (impact and briefs first) and industry (methods and case studies first).
After the PhD
first 2–3 years
- Keep publishing and keep one foot in each sector, e.g. an academic post plus advisory work, or a policy role plus an honorary research affiliation.
- Track the likelihood scores: they rise quickly with each publication, grant and policy citation.
What each country requires
Correct as far as public sources show in October 2026. Always check official sources before acting.
Graduate · Skilled Worker · Global Talent
PhD graduates get 3 years on the Graduate route (the cut to 18 months from 1 Jan 2027 applies to bachelor’s and master’s graduates). Skilled Worker needs a sponsor. Global Talent (British Academy endorsement) needs no sponsor.
Home market
No visa barrier. Civil-service roles (BRIN, ministries) are recruited through the national CPNS/PPPK cycle; universities and companies hire directly.
Researcher permit · EU Blue Card
Universities usually sponsor a researcher permit. Industry uses the EU Blue Card. Permanent EU-institution posts require EU citizenship. Local language often matters for policy roles.
J-1 · H-1B · O-1
Postdocs often come on J-1. Universities are exempt from the H-1B cap, but industry roles go through the H-1B lottery. O-1 needs a strong record of distinction.
